Brownmead contingency plan for a local Covid 19 outbreak.

In the event of a local Covid 19 outbreak the Brownmead Team will strive to work with our families to deliver a broad and ambitious and accessible curriculum which will allow children to keep learning while they are isolating at home.

Process in the event of local outbreaks:

If our school sees a spike in infection rates that is resulting in localised community spread, appropriate authorities will decide which measures to implement to help contain the spread. The Department for Education will be involved in decisions at a local and national level affecting a geographical area, and will offer us support and health advice.

Planning for groups or closure of the whole school:

This plan can be put into action immediately if:

•         There’s a local outbreak and Brownmead are asked to close temporarily for most pupils like during the initial school closures in March 2020; or

•         Groups of pupils need to self-isolate, but the rest of the school is still open.

What we will provide when teaching remotely when teaching remotely:

·         For year groups who are self-isolating, a two week plan of work can be found on the Brownmead Website: in the  section under COVID-19: Covid Lockdown Curriculum.

·         The work above is designed to support age-related learning for the first 2 weeks of any lockdown or year group isolation. If the school or a year group are required to isolate for longer than two weeks, the following plan will be put into place.

·         English teaching and skills will be taught through The Oak National Academy

·         Maths will be taught through White Rose maths hub

·         Science and topic through The Oak National Academy

·         Other websites will be used to support lessons determined by the teaching staff

·         If the year group or school needs to isolate for more than 2 weeks, we will plan a programmes of work that reflects the core teaching pupils would receive in school, using the resources listed above and including contact with class teachers through Class Dojo or through direct email via the school email address. Depending on the current subject content being taught we may need to teach stand-alone units of appropriate key skills.

·         Set assignments so that pupils have work each day in a number of different subjects, and monitor pupils’ engagement with these assignments through conversations or exchange of work via email OR using the Class Dojo ‘teaching’ facility – this enables staff to set work and for children to upload to it. We will gauge how well pupils are progressing through the curriculum, using questions and other suitable tasks, and set a clear expectation on how regularly teachers will check work. Subject and senior leaders will monitor coverage and marking across the curriculum.

·         Teach a planned and sequenced curriculum so that knowledge and skills are built incrementally, with clarity about learning intentions and what’s intended to be taught and practised in each subject.

·         Provide frequent explanations of new content, delivered by teachers in the year group’s team, through curriculum resources and/or videos.

·         We will encourage Brownmead teachers to adjust the pace or difficulty of what’s being taught in response to questions or assessments, including, where necessary, revising material or simplifying explanations to ensure pupils’ understanding and involve teaching assistants in leading small group interventions on focused activities and content where this is required.

·         We will endeavour to avoid an over-reliance on long-term projects or internet research activities as these can place a strain where technology is shared or has limited availability in some of our Brownmead family households.

·         All expectations will vary in relation your pupils’ age, stage of development and SEND.

·         We will endeavour to avoid making significant demands for parents’ help or support.

We will plan to continue to teach the key skills in the topics set out in the class pages on the Brownmead website.

The Oak National Academy

The ‘teaching content’ will be provided to children through age appropriate video content on the DfE published list of educational resources site; Oak National Academy website. This provides the equivalent of 3 hours of lessons per day for primary school children. In their ‘classroom’

each lesson is an hour-long. They’re delivered by a teacher, with a pre-recorded video as well as quizzes, worksheets and creative activities. It’s all easy to use, there’s no login or password, and you can access the lessons on any device- pupils only need materials they can find at home.

We may also use online educational resources successfully used across our school during the previous lockdown which include but are not limited to:

Maths –  For year groups 1 -6. Using White Rose maths, children will be guided to the appropriate year group they are in and to one of the topics available.

They then select a lesson to complete; this includes a video and subsequent questions. For year groups 1 -6. Times Tables Rockstars will allow the children to practice their times tables and enter competitions. For EYFS

English Online reading books for all year groups. Log in required to access Reading Buddy. Books can be set by the teachers at the right level for the child. Spelling for years 2 to 6, Phonics for EYFS to year2. Pobble 365 will be used as a stimulus for writing, along with the oaks academy and Once upon a picture. Teachers will set activities linked to materials from these websites. Brilliant story telling by astronauts! For all year groups

We will also endeavour to quickly provide offline (e.g. resource packs, reading books) resources that are linked to our curriculum expectations, providing printed resources, such as textbooks and workbooks, for pupils who don’t have suitable online access, where it is safe to do so.

Younger pupils and some pupils with SEND may not be able to access remote education without adult support, and we will work with families to deliver our Brownmead curriculum in the best and most appropriate possible way in these situations. We may use Oak National Academy specialist content for pupils with SEND. This covers communication and language, numeracy, creative arts, independent living, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech and language therapy.

Disadvantaged pupils and remote working.

We will work with Birmingham LA to acquire laptops and tablets for disadvantaged pupils in years 3 to 6 and clinically extremely vulnerable children from all year groups unable to attend school. These devices will be owned by the school and provided to children and young people who would otherwise be unable to access remote education. The Department for Education is working in partnership with BT to offer free access to BT Wi-Fi hotspots for disadvantaged pupils. The DfE are also working with the major telecommunications companies to expand this offer and provide access to free additional data to families who rely on a mobile internet connection while the response to coronavirus (COVID-19) requires pupils to learn from home and access social care services online.
