MFL Curriculum Intent:

  • Foster a love and understanding of culture and diversity by celebrating the languages in our school community.

  • Provide children with necessary life-long skills to ensure they can speak confidently and with purpose .

  • Build a community of engaged learners who apply their speaking and listening skills across the curriculum.

  • Provide plenty of opportunities to practise speaking Spanish in a variety of scenarios.

  • Develop a consistent approach to Spanish teaching in order to provide a solid foundation and a clear progression of skills.

MFL Curriculum Implementation:

We follow a robust curriculum based on a very clear progression of skills across speaking, listening, reading and writing. Children enjoy a wide range of activities to bring their learning of Spanish to life. Songs, rhymes, mimes and pictures all bring excitement and fun to our Spanish lessons. We follow the Hola Espanol scheme of work with interactive quizzes and fun games. Each lesson is carefully tailored to build upon previous sessions, consolidating knowledge before moving on to the next stage. Children are given plenty of time within each lesson to practise conversation and listening skills, building confidence and experience.

MFL Curriculum Impact:

  • Children know a range of phrases, words and  numbers in Spanish; getting progressively more complex as they progress through KS2.
  • Children feel confident pronouncing Spanish words and joining in with conversations in Spanish.
  • Children enjoy speaking Spanish and can use it in contexts outside of the classroom.
  • Children are able to articulate key Spanish words and phrases, understanding how letter sounds can differ to English.

How does this look at Brownmead?

All children in Brownmead will have exposure to MFL. At Brownmead, we learn Spanish, this is explicitly taught from KS2 (year 3 to year 6). EYFS and KS1 will have some Spanish built into their learning to prepare them for KS2. This could be answering the register, saying good morning as they come in or fun counting videos, this is further experienced in our 'language of the month assemblies'. From KS2, we explicitly teach Spanish. All children will have a 30 minute teaching slot per week for a lesson. We teach from the Hola Espanol scheme of work.

Language of the Month

Each month we focus on a language from within our school community. The language is launched during our Language of the Month assembly and children are encouraged to use that language around school.
